The first video I will be analysing is Bloodshake by Peace, the band are a cutting edge indie rock band. They have used their video to try and capture the style of their music that they're creating and show you not only through the music but by also using visual effects.
The way the video uses cinematography is very different to a conventional music video, the have very fast pans and low angle shots of the band, they also uses so wide angle shots of the band while there are playing as to give a sense of realism. The main shots that are used during this video are what you would tend to see in a music video, but they have some shots that are not normally used, for ecample they have a over the sholder shot, which we tend to see in films and tv. This could have conitations to the fact that as this band are from the alternative genre they are trying to show this through the used of cinematography in there video.
The use of editing in the video gives the video a very fast paced style to it, showing that the song is very energetic just like the band, the use of a green screen to shoot the video, and placing in the back ground images of the shy, clouds and different images of the band members colourised gives the video a Psychedelic feel to it which has connotations to the band’s music, it shows the bands style of music without having to hear the song. During the video there are some shots of the using a sword to cut up fruit and ripping a bag of flour over their heads, this could have connotations of the band trying to show everyone that there are fun loving people and that they are all friends who do these things together.
The mise en scene of this video has very good meaning in relation to the style of the music, the band members are all wearing shirts and skinny jeans, which it the typical clothing you would expext for a band from this genre. This is good in the video because without even listening to the song you know what the band is going to be like. The clothing that the band wear could also conitate other meanings, for example it could be saying that they are trying to fit in with the 'indie' style that the clothes would normally be, it could also relate to the type of music that they like as they dress like them, this could be bands like the clash, nirvana and The who, who all fit into the same style and catagory of music which could give meaning to who they take there inspiration from.
There is no real narrative to the video, it is more of a performance/abstract video that captures the feel of the song but also includes the preforming the song which gives the audience a better feel of the song and the band.
The song will appeal to a large audience and also attract other audiences in due to its 80s psychedelic feel it gives the audience a kind of hallucinogenic vibe to the hole video. The main audience of the video will be between 14-20 as this is the main age that people will go out to gigs and listen to new music, the main type of audience will be young females and older males mostly who listen to indie music.
In the video, the band have very effectively used a green screen to add effect to their video, added with a mixture of performance and abstract they have given the view a denotive that they are looking into the bands life and seeing what they do in everyday life but when we look closer at a conotive level we can see that this band is just showing us what they are all about and that everything they do in the video has a meaning, for example in one of the shots we see the lead singer harrison dressed as the lead singer from the band spector which we can see in this picture below.
this shows us that peace dont think thast they are the only band around, they are showing the audiance through codes that they are also fans of other music and showing us who they take inspiration from.
, the fact that in the video they have shots of them slicing fruit with swords and slicing a bag of flower over there head gives the feel that they are trying to create a high class video on not a very high budget and appealing to a working class audience as well as many others
